WIC Session: "Advancement and Retention of Female Chemical Engineers: Issues and Strategies"

Retention of women at all levels in science and engineering careers is a major concern. A recent report by the NSF shows that there are still significant disparities between male and female engineers of similar ages and education levels with regard to unemployment, occupational responsibilities, rank, type of employment (e.g., part-time versus full-time), type of employer, and tenure/promotion cases.1 We address this theme within the context of chemical engineering from both an academic and industrial perspective. Topics include strategies for retaining women, novel arrangements that allow flexibility for dual-career couples and working mothers, mechanisms for supporting and promoting women, and "best practices" for advancement of female engineers. In addition, two speakers will discuss preliminary findings from recently awarded NSF ADVANCE grants, intended to increase the participation of women in academic science and engineering careers.
